Evaluating the role of Nux Vomica in managing irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract

Background: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel habits, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. While conventional treatments offer symptomatic relief, side effects and recurrence are common concerns. Nux Vomica, a well-known homeopathic remedy derived from the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica, has been traditionally used for managing digestive disorders, yet its role in IBS remains underexplored.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of Nux Vomica in managing IBS symptoms, improving bowel habits, and enhancing the quality of life in affected individuals.

Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted with 120 IBS patients diagnosed according to Rome IV criteria. Participants were randomly assigned to the Nux Vomica group (Group A) or placebo group (Group B) and followed for 12 weeks. Symptom severity, stool frequency, and quality of life were assessed using validated tools such as the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-SSS) and the SF-36 Health Survey Questionnaire.

Results: The Nux Vomica group showed a significant reduction in abdominal pain (P=0.035) and bloating (P=0.041) compared to the placebo group. Improvements in stool frequency and consistency were also observed (P=0.029). Participants reported enhanced quality of life scores in the physical and emotional health domains (P=0.038). Adverse effects were minimal and statistically insignificant between the two groups (P=0.092).

Conclusion: Nux Vomica demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing IBS symptoms, normalizing bowel habits, and improving overall quality of life. Its favorable safety profile supports its potential as a complementary therapy in IBS management.
