Comparative efficacy of Thuja Occidentalis and conventional treatments in wart removal: A randomized controlled trial with long-term follow-up

Farhana Kabir Tisha

Abstract

Background: Warts, caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), remain a common dermatological concern with inconsistent treatment outcomes. Conventional therapies, including cryotherapy and salicylic acid, often face recurrence issues. In contrast, Thuja Occidentalis, a homeopathic remedy, has been traditionally used for wart treatment.

Objective: This study aims to compare the efficacy of Thuja Occidentalis and conventional wart treatments, evaluating wart clearance rates, recurrence, and adverse effects over a long-term follow-up period.

Methods: A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) with 200 participants was conducted. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: Thuja Occidentalis (Group A) and Conventional Treatments (Group B). The primary outcome was wart clearance, while secondary outcomes included recurrence rates and adverse effects. Data were analyzed using statistical tools, and results were presented graphically and in tabular formats.

Results: Wart clearance rates were 72% in Group A and 68% in Group B (P=0.045). Recurrence was significantly lower in Group A (10%) compared to Group B (18%) (P=0.039). Adverse effects were minimal in both groups, with Group A showing fewer occurrences.
Conclusion: Thuja Occidentalis demonstrated comparable efficacy to conventional treatments, with lower recurrence and fewer adverse effects, positioning it as a viable alternative therapy for wart management.
